What Does Our Logo Symbolize?

Our logo displays Lady Justice wrapped within a laurel wreath.

Lady Justice is based on the Greek goddess Themis (honored as clear sighted) and the Roman goddess Justicia (honored as representing the virtue of justice).  She is designed to represent the ideal running of our justice system.

Lady Justice is blindfolded because justice is unbiased and should not be based on a person’s appearance or other outside influences like power, status, fame, or wealth. A court of law commences a trial of a dispute with no prior knowledge of it and complete impartiality. This is designed to symbolize that justice should be rendered “without passion or prejudice” to ensure a result which is fair.

Lady Justice holds the scales to represent the impartiality of the Court’s decisions. Each party during a trial presents its evidence to the court and the scales then slowly begin to tip one way or the other.   Everything, including what the law states and what jurisprudence dictates, should be carefully and accurately weighed in order to find the most justiciable decision. At the end of the trial, the successful party is one who has said who has tipped the scale in their favor.  The scales hang freely from her gasp and this is symbolic that the evidence should stand on its own without tangible foundation on speculation.

Lady Justice holds a sword as a symbol of the power of justice.  It is designed to advance the concept that justice can be swift and final, swords being historic symbols of authority and power.  The sword also shows that the justice system has the power to enforce the laws created by the government on behalf of society and that all citizens are bound by the law in the same way.  The double-edged blade of Lady Justice’s sword signifies that rulings can always go either way depending on the circumstance and evidence presented.

The symbol always stands for the belief that Courts protect the rights of the people without consideration of other factors.  She represents the goal of the judiciary to decide cases in a fair and impartial manner.

The laurel wreath is made from interwoven leaves of the bay laurel plant, which was worn on the head of emperors to signify imperial power and authority.  Laurel wreaths are associated with victory, success and achievement.
